| 80 days...
I think it's about time I update this thing.
In 80 days I will be getting on a plane and going to Cambodia for an Interim program. I will be going with a group from Calvin (12 other students and 1 professor). We will arrive in Bangkok after a long flight (20ish hours?), and there we will meet up with another college group from a christian university in South Korea. We will stay in Bangkok for a few days to get used to the climate and time change (12 hours ahead of Grand Rapids time). We will also get a chance to explore the city a bit, which I am really looking forward to.
After a few days we will drive across the border to Cambodia, where we will spend the rest of our time. We will be staying in Siem Reap, on Tonle Sap, the "great lake" of southeast Asia. Siem Reap is not a major city, but it is big enough to have western-style hotels and restaurants, while also being small enough to still feel like Cambodia. The main focus of our trip is food production and diet, so while we are there we will be travelling outside of Siem Reap during the day to work with local people and find out how they produce food and what they eat. We will also be doing some planning for a christian university that will be built near Siem Reap in the next few years.
Towards the end of the trip we will take a few days to visit Angkor Wat, a large buddhist temple ruin from the 12th century.
I'm really excited for this trip for a few reasons. I've always loved to travel, but I've never been farther than Canada or Mexico. This time I get the chance to travel somewhere completely new, where I don't know much about the culture, language, or even the country itself. It will be quite an adventure. I like adventures. I also get to go with a group of people my own age, and we will all be experiencing this together. And finally, while this trip does involve some sightseeing, it also has a larger purpose. I don't have anything against traveling just for fun, but since I have to work hard to earn the money for this trip, I would rather spend it doing something that could help other people.
I'm sure I'll have more to write about later, but this is all I really know about the trip for now. Also, it is time for dinner. Adios.
